Remote Learning Series: PE @ Home

When you think of Physical Education, the words “remote learning” don’t necessarily come to mind as an instructional method that would be part of the learning process.  However, the PE Department at Giant Steps Day School rose to the occasion through collaboration and creativity to develop a schedule that made sense for families, was easily accessible, and engaging for everyone!

Gabe Ortiz, PE Teacher for Secondary/Transition classrooms, shared the following about how the team collaborated when Remote Learning started in March 2020 “One of the ways we tackled the challenge of remote learning was to be on the same page (literally). We made sure that the entire PE program used the same lesson template, offering a consistent outline of five focus areas with activities for students to complete at home”.

Kelly Miotti, PE Teacher for Elementary classrooms, shared that some tweaks were made to the schedules based on parent feedback for Extended School Year.  PE activities were incorporated into student schedules two times a week during ESY.

Both Gabe and Kelly shared an activity that their students enjoyed engaging in:

“One of activities that students enjoyed was a “Rainbow Exercise Scavenger Hunt” that I found from a Facebook Group for Elementary PE Teachers.” ~ Kelly Miotti

“One of my favorite activities would have to be the “Stuffed Animal Relay”. This is one of the activities where I got the most positive feedback and even got a couple of family shared videos of students participating in it!” ~ Gabe Ortiz

Gabe and Kelly can’t wait to see students in person and in the meantime will continue to provide fun activities at home!
