Giant Steps’ Library Comes to Life

Giant Steps’ Library features hundreds of books. It is a place for students to read their books, listen to their books, and/or to work in a quiet area.

It’s been nearly a decade since Giant Steps took the first step in forming our very own library. What started as a few boxes of donated books in a conference room is now a dedicated library space with hundreds of books. The books are broken into color coordinated categories that are further broken down into specific subjects. These categories help students locate books they would like to check out and is an efficient way for students to put books away when they are finished.

The collection of books that the Giant Steps Library features have been donated or purchased from Scholastic book fairs or other library and school book sale events. The interests of our students and topics from our curriculum frameworks are taken into consideration when books are purchased. All of our books are cataloged and can be found on our Giant Steps web-page under the Parent’s Corner tab.

We strive to meet the needs of all students; therefore we take pride in offering a variety of hard copy books that students can read and digital books that students can enjoy listening to at the library, in the classroom, or at home.

The Giant Steps library card is the newest upgrade to our library. The checkout and check-in process began as a written record and has now been updated with the use of technology. All of our Giant Steps’ students have their very own library card to scan in order to check out books.

The Giant Steps’ Library is MORE than a place to find a good book, it also serves as a vocational task for our students. Students work on a variety of skills including janitorial (e.g. cleaning windows, dusting shelves) and organizational tasks (e.g. straightening out bins and shelving books by category).

The Giant Steps’ Library would not be where it is today without two of our Giant Steps’ Parents. Mrs. Joan Kobs and Mrs. Rorre Hafner took the first steps almost ten years ago to building the Giant Steps’ Library. They have volunteered thousands of hours to add new books through donations or purchases from the book fair, organization of our shelving units, and creating the Library Catalog process.

“The library at Giant Steps has transformed into an area where the kids can read, learn, and discover new information. Our motivation to keep the library updated and organized is due to the excitement of the students when they find books of interest to read and use the space like a typical library.  It is also refreshing to see that the students can easily navigate their way through the different sections of the library with ease to find what they are looking for.”
