CANOPY Adult Day Program, a Division of Giant Steps

What: Canopy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit day program for adults on the autism spectrum. The program began in May, 2012 as a response to the growing needs of the adult autism population in the Chicagoland area.

Who: Canopy Adult Day Program primarily serves adults between the ages of 22 and 40. Our Intake Process is tailored to meet the needs of each incoming participant. This ensures that the transition into the program is seamless and that the appropriate tools and resources are in place to best support each incoming individual. Participants may be graduates from Giant Steps’ Day School or have come from other outside agencies, programs, or districts.

How: Canopy Adult Day Program meets the needs of all participants regardless of their functional abilities. To ensure that we offer the highest quality program, we provide a variable cluster ratio of staff to participants for daily activities. A variable cluster ratio provides support ranging from “1 to 1” to “1 to 4” staff to participant ratio depending on the needs of the participants.

Schedules for each participant are built to incorporate a combination of life skills, pre-vocational activities, community access, creative media and technology. Participants can attend 1 – 5 days per week, from 9:30 – 2:30 each day. An optional daily transportation program is provided for participants from Lisle to Sugar Grove and back to Lisle.

Canopy Bus to transport participants to and from the day program and community outings.

Examples of daily activities that occur at the Canopy Adult Day Program are: therapeutic riding through Christine’s Dream Equestrian Center, Golfing, Fishing, Cooking, Music, Art, Vocation Stations, Community Outings, Movement Sessions, and more!

Why: Canopy strives to provide structured, yet flexible, autism specific programming for adults on the autism spectrum. We take pride in recognizing the strengths and interests of each participant, to ensure meaningful opportunities to interact with the broader community. Our goal is to support Canopy participants to live a purposeful, safe, and happy life.
